Robert Urban, who heads the Johnson and Johnson Innovation Center in Boston, joined NECN to talk about the work the company is doing in the New England region.

Urban explained that although Johnson and Johnson is known for things like bandaids and baby shampoo, but they also have a medical device and diagnostics component, in addition to a successful pharmaceutical business.

"Generally speaking, these ideas typically come out of medical centers. These are the breakthrough discoveries that you often hear about in a place like Boston," Urban said. "We're helping to explore how and if those particular discoveries might make new medical solutions possible, so often times they're in academic laboratories, but in most cases, we find ways to have those be pursued through small biotech type companies that we work very closely with."

Johnson and Johnson is working on a number of products at their Boston innovation center. Specifically, Urban said that the company is working closely with Boston's Children's Hospital to develop new medicines.

Urban also discussed the company's pipeline for the future.
