Massachusetts Gaming Commission Denies Application for Casino License in Brockton

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has voted to deny an application for a casino license in Brockton.

The 4-1 vote came in on Thursday afternoon.

Previously, the chairman of the state's Gaming Commission decried the design of a proposed casino in Brockton, Massachusetts, calling it a "great disappointment."

The Boston Globe reports Stephen Crosby made the comments at a public hearing Wednesday.

Crosby said the casino's design isolates it from the community and lacks strategies for urban renewal and economic development.

Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, a longtime proponent of the casino, said the criticism was unfair and inaccurate.

The proposed Brockton casino was vying for the state's third and final resort casino license.

The decision comes as the Mashpee Wampanoag are beginning construction on a $1 billion casino on reservation land in Taunton, just 20 miles away.
