Report: Boston Food Workers Average $14K a Year

Thursday, Zillow.com, the real estate tracking website, released a report on home affordability by occupation and whether the people who do these jobs can afford to live in the Boston area.

According to the report, the average teacher in our area makes about $46,000 a year. Zillow says they can afford 38 percent of the homes on the market and homes up to $282,000.

Firefighters, on average, make $70,000 a year. They can afford 65.5 percent of the real estate listings and can spend up to $429,000 for a home.

Lawyers and judges make a median salary of $104,000 and can afford 82.5 percent of listings on the market in the Boston metro area. They're able to spend up to a $638,000 on a house.

Food service workers make a median salary of just $14,000. They're only able to afford 3.8 percent of listings - up to an $85,000 home.

Finally, the report took at look at construction workers. On average, they make a median salary of $30,000 and can afford 16.3 percent of listings, being able to spend up to $184,000 on a home.

These number are for Boston and vary around the nation. Salaries and home prices are different in other places. People in different areas also spend different percentages of their incomes on housing.

In the Boston area, people paid a median of 26 percent of their income toward their mortgages.
