Plenty of people in Massachusetts headed out to shop on Saturday while supporting their local, small businesses.

Founded by American Express in 2010, 'Small Business Saturday' is celebrated the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a way to support small businesses, rather than the big box companies.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was one of those supporters who headed out to one of city's neighborhoods to remind consumers of the importance of shopping small. One of his stops was Dandelions Flowers Shop in Roslindale.

"Last year we saw a boost to the economy with small businesses. They really depend upon this time of year to make their profits and make ends meet," Walsh said, who put in an order at the flower shop.

Owner of Dandelions, Karen Power, said the day makes a big difference for her bottom line.

“I love small business Saturday. The hustle and the bustle. (It’s the) beginning of the holiday season. It's nice,” said Power.

Shoppers who were out and about said they support the idea of shopping small.

“We decided we're going to buy at least one gift for Christmas today and try to get all five during the season out of this local Rosindale market,” said Jack Litwinsky, of West Roxbury.

Walsh, who even brought out Santa to enhance his message, says 58 cents of every dollar spent locally, stays local.

"We're asking everyone if they can buy 5 of their Christmas presents in a local business it would be great," Walsh said.
