The Importance of Grill Safety

Every year, there are fires involving open grills - in 2014, 103 were reported in Massachusetts.

To avoid problems, be sure to keep your grill outside and away from your house.

You shouldn't use gas or charcoal grills on porches or balconies. Use an electric grill instead. And create a circle of safety, keeping children and pets three feet away from the grill at all times.

If you're a charcoal griller, use only charcoal starter fluid. Gasoline and kerosene should never be used. Never add lighter fluid to hot coals.

If you have a gas grill, check to make sure all the connections are secure before firing it up, and inspect it for leaks or cracks.

Get rid of any propane cylinders that are old and rusty, and always store propane away from your home.

Make sure the lid of a gas grill is open when you light it, and always turn off the burners and close the propane cylinder when you are done.
