New technology is increasingly helping small businesses compete with the big guys.

Steve Leavitt, general manager of U.S. cloud solutions for Exact Online, says his company's 145,000 customers worldwide are typically buying business software for retail and accounting management.

"I think the big game changer for small businesses especially, just because they're small doesn't make their processes or their business any less complex than a large company, so the cloud is enabling small companies to really get enterprise-like functionality in a way that's more palatable for a small business budget," he said.
