Dead Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies

Public officials urge anyone in direct contact with the animal in West Roxbury, Mass., to seek treatment for exposure

A skunk found dead in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, has tested positive for rabies.

Boston Public Health Commission officials are asking anyone in the area who believes that they had direct contact with the rabid skunk to notify them by calling (617) 534-5611.

The skunk was found on Stimson Street. On Wednesday, health officials will post flyers in the neighborhood urging anyone who had direct contact to seek treatment for exposure.

Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain and nervous system. Once people get the virus, it spreads through the body and is often fatal.

Pets are also at risk for rabies exposure. If you think your pet may have been exposed, it is advised you get in contact with your veterinarian.
