First Human Case of West Nile Virus in Mass. This Year

Patient, who is in his 60s, is resident of Middlesex County

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has announced the first human case of West Nile Virus in the state this year.

The patient, of Middlesex County, is a man in his 60s. He remains hospitalized, but is recovering.

Officials are conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine where the man was most likely exposed to infected mosquitoes.

Assessment of WNV risk areas will depend on the findings of this investigation.

Last year, eight cases of WNV were detected in Bay State residents. None of them were fatal.

Symptoms can include fever or flu-like illnesses.
