Officials Warn of Boston Area Mumps Outbreak

Health officials warned Greater Boston on Friday about an outbreak of mumps in the area.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 12 cases have been diagnosed, mostly among Latino residents in Boston, Revere and Chelsea.

The 12 recent cases are among people between 20 and 41. The residents presented symptoms of mumps between March 24 and May 31. Ten of those patients have shown signs of illness since May 9.

Overall, health officials note that most confirmed and probable mumps cases in the Bay State have been among vaccinated college students and other people linked to higher education facilities.

"MMR vaccination is highly protective against mumps and is recommended for children and adults," Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said in a statement regarding the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine. "In addition, those who have mumps should stay isolated at home for five days after their onset of swelling. Mumps is usually a mild disease but can cause serious illness. If you think you have mumps, stay home and call your health care provider."
