British Sprinter Martyn Rooney Apologizes for Post-Race Reaction

"I ran like a d**k," he said

A British runner has apologized for using a four-letter word to describe his performance at the men’s 400-meter preliminaries.

Martyn Rooney, 29, was asked by a BBC reporter for his reaction after failing to qualify for the semifinals and finishing fifth in his heat.

“Realizing you’re the second fastest loser at the moment,” the reporter said, “describe your frustration.”

Rooney, obviously disappointed, didn't hold back.

“I ran like a d**k,” he answered. “That’s pretty much as simple as that.”

The English sprinter, who specializes in the 400-meter race, later issued an apology on Twitter.

“Honored to represent my country, disappointed to run so poorly on the biggest stage,” he said. “Apologies for my language post race, I need to sort out my head out for the relay and deliver for the guys when I’m needed.”

Rooney ranked 22nd in the final results. Reigning Olympic champion James Kirani from Grenada and USA's LaShawn Merritt, who won the Olympic gold in 2008, moved into the semifinals which take place Saturday.
