Tropical Storm Joaquin Forms in Atlantic; Marty Weakens Off Mexico Coast

Tropical Storm Joaquin formed in the Atlantic on Monday, becoming the 10th named storm of the season.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Joaquin was centered 400 miles northeast of the central Bahamas late Monday. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving southwest at 5 mph. There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but the center said the storm was expected to strengthen during the next couple of days.

In the eastern Pacific, meanwhile, Tropical Storm Marty weakened a little off Mexico's coast on Tuesday.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday decreased to near 65 mph with additional weakening expected over the next few days.

Marty is centered about 90 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is moving east near 2 mph. A tropical storm warning is in effect for part of Mexico's coast from Acapulco to Lazaro Cardenas.

The Hurricane Center on Monday said Marty was expected to be just offshore of the southwestern coast of Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday, while "only a small deviation" would bring the center onto shore.

Forecasters also warned of significant coastal flooding.
