Two Sheriff's Employees Shot at Fresno Jail

Two veteran correctional officers were in critical condition Sunday after being shot in the lobby of a central California county jail Saturday morning by an alleged gang member.

Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan were shot in their heads and necks around 8:30 a.m. after the suspect, 37-year-old Thong Vang, entered the lobby of the Fresno County Jail and became disgruntled when officers told him to wait patiently in line. As law enforcement attempted to restrain him, Vang opened fire, according to a sheriff's spokeswoman.

Davila is listed as being in critical, but stable condition while Scanlan remains in critical condition, according to a Sheriff's spokeswoman.

Vang, from Fresno, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. He has a prior criminal history and was sentenced to 14 years in prison for a 1998 Fresno rape case, according to a sheriff's spokeswoman.
