1 Dead, 1 Hurt in Head-on Crash on I-495 in Massachusetts

The exact cause and circumstances of the crash are under investigation

One person died and another was injured Saturday morning, in a head-on collision crash on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

State police troopers responded to the crash at 6:40 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway, just south of exit 33.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a Ford Focus was traveling southbound, when for unknown reasons, left the roadway, and crossed the median, striking a Toyota Camry traveling northbound.

Police said the driver of the Ford Focus was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Camry that was struck, was transported to Lahey Clinic with serious injuries. The identities of the drivers have not been released.

During the investigation, the northbound lanes of traffic had to be rerouted, but have since reopened.
