Man Fatally Shot in Lawrence, Massachusetts ID'd

Police in Lawrence, Massachusetts say they are enforcing a strict curfew at city-owned buildings and areas after one man was killed and three others were injured in two unrelated shootings on Monday night. 

Lawrence police said local officers along with Methuen police responded to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen after staff there notified them that three men had come into the emergency room with gunshot wounds. Officers learned that the shooting had happened at Howard Park on the Methuen/Lawrence town lines. 

Two of the injured men, who are 35-year-old Lowell residents, were later taken to Boston-area hospitals with serious injuries. Their current condition is unknown. 

The third injured man, an 18-year-old Lawrence resident, was shot in the foot and was treated at Holy Family Hospital. 

Their names have not been released. 

According to state police, authorities in Lawrence were responding to the first incident when they were notified of the second incident on South Union Street. 

Police said 26-year-old Jose Arias-Lara, of Lawrence, was driving when he was shot in the chest before crashing into several utility poles. He was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of both shootings and believe all of the victims were targeted. 

Police said that while they don't believe the shootings are related, anyone with information is asked to anonymously contact police at 978-794-5900. 

In the wake of the violent incidents, police said they will be imposing a strict curfew on all public property at sundown. 

The curfew is a reaffirmation of a city ordinance. Police said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon that the violent incidents sparked this enforcement. 

Those who are found in violation of the ordinance could be subject to arrest. 

Residents are urged to call police if they see any activity after dark in any city park.
