1 Dead, 1 Injured in 3-Alarm Fire in Boston's Roxbury Neighborhood

One person died Saturday following a three alarm fire at an abandoned home in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood.

Initial reports of a heavy, 2-alarm fire at a home in Roxbury came in Saturday morning. Heavy flames consumed the 2-story house on George Street and it quickly escalated to 3-alarms. Firefighters were unable to enter the home before it collapsed into itself.

Neighbor Ralph Alvarado was getting ready to leave his home when he saw the smoke. He bravily rushed in and found a man trapped.

Alvarado said the man was, "gasping for air, his face was in black smoke, and his clothes were burned."

A man trapped inside the home was transported to a local hospital and according to the Boston Fire Department is receiving treatment for "serious burns."

Later in the day, the Boston Fire Department confirmed 'an adult fatality' after discovering the body during a search of the building. The identity of that person is not yet known.

Fire officials and neighbors said homeless people and drug addicts were known to occupy the house at times.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but fire officials say the building is a total loss.
