Safety Concerns After Driver Killed by Falling Tree in Oxford

Police in Oxford, Massachusetts say a man is dead after heavy winds knocked a tree onto a car Thursday.

The incident happened on Sutton Avenue, which was closed at Douglas Road near the Rod and Gun Club.

The tree crashed through the windshield of a 2015 Honda Fit hatchback, trapping the man.

The victim has been identified as Peter Kintzer, age 55, of Sutton.

There were no other occupants inside the car at the time of the accident.

Lt. Anthony Saad of Oxford police said, "It's definitely an unfortunate freak type accident. You can see the wind all around us today is still pretty heavy at this point. Just blew over an old oak tree and landed right on the top of the car killing the person who was driving it."

"It's definitely unusual. It could have happened to any one of us traveling on this roadway it was unfortunate for this gentlemen he happened to be the one," he added.

Oxford's DPW director said the tree that fell had a rotten root system. But it wasn't on the town's 'priority tree removal list.

He has since been notified of other trees in decline in that area.

He said the town's tree warden will determine which need to come down, so no other family has to suffer this shattering loss.
