The MSPCA recently acquired 17 Chihuahuas in need of new homes after the dogs were surrendered from a home in Jamaica Plain, according to the organization.
“Our sense is that these dogs may never have left the apartments in which they lived and, as a result, will need time to learn how to walk on a leash, obey some basic commands and so on,” said Anna Rafferty-Arnold, associate director of the MSPCA’s Boston adoption center. “But we’re committed to working with them — and their new owners — to ensure they become excellent canine citizens."
The dogs were surrendered to the MSPCA after their owners, a family split between three apartments in a three-unit building, had to move but were unable to find dog-friendly housing, according to the organization.
The arrival of the Chihuahuas follows last week’s surrender of 45 Ragdoll cats, which was the largest single-home cat surrender in five years to the shelter, according to MSPCA.
Eleven of the dogs will be available at the MSPCA Jamaica Plain adoption center and the other six will be available at the MSPCA-Cape Cod in Centerville. The centers will be offering free obedience training as part of the adoption fees.
