2 Dead After Drowning in Maine River

Two people are dead after drowning in the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River in Island Falls, Maine, on Friday afternoon.

According to officials, at 3:30 p.m., Maine Game Wardens, Island Falls Fire Department and Maine State Police responded to a report of two subjects that were presumed to have drowned.

Witnesses said they saw Kobe Berry, 13, of Bangor struggling in the current near the middle of the river.  An adult male, Jamie Crystal, 49 of Crystal, swam towards Berry in an attempt to save him when both Berry and Crystal became submerged.

A search involving a watercraft, aircraft and foot search began along the river. 

Main's body was recovered at 6 p.m. and Berry was recovered at 8 p.m.
