Child Killed in Fire on Cape Cod

Police confirm an 8-year-old boy was killed when a shed caught fire in Hyannis, Mass.

An 8-year-old boy is dead after a fire broke out in a shed behind a home in Barnstable, Massachusetts, police confirmed Monday night.

Flames engulfed a backyard shed at 252 Hinckley Street in the village of Barnstable around 5:30 p.m. The young boy was trapped inside.

District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, calling it a tragic accident.

Investigators are combing what's left of the shed to try to find out how the fire started and what led to what they think is not suspicious, but a tragic accident, that they at first thought was in the home.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said emergency crews did what they could to fight the fire but later discovered the boy's remains.

Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said it appears to be horrific, tragic, snuffing out the life of a young child.

Witnesses tell NECN three other kids were also in the shed.

Neighbors heard an explosion, then saw the flames and called 911.

John Aguiar did all he could to save the boy.

Venessa Jackson, who called 911, has two adult children and feels for the boy's family.

There's still a lot to be learned about how the kids got in the shed, what they were doing, and what might have caused that explosion described by witnesses.

Investigators are not going to release the name of the victim tonight in deference to the family.
