2 Killed, 2 Injured in Bar Harbor, Maine Fire After Home Collapses

Investigators say a house fire in Bar Harbor that caused the home to collapse into its basement killed two family members and injured two others.

The fatal blaze happened on Sunday morning. Authorities say the 2-1/2-story home collapsed, and the fire was reported at about 8 a.m. Investigators had to use an excavator to remove rubble, and bodies of two people were recovered later in the day.

Authorities said the fire was reported by an occupant of the house, who told a dispatcher that he and his son had escaped, but his wife and other son were still in the house.

"He told the 911 dispatcher that his residence was on fire and his son who jumped from the second story window and himself had escaped from the residence," state police spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement.

The two injured males were taken to MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor. One was later transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and the other to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Police have not identified the names of the four people involved.

The Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an examination on Monday. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
