The two girls were spotted at the bottom of an 8-foot deep section and were pulled out of the water by motel guests and family members. They were being supervised by their uncle at the time. There was no lifeguard on duty.

Two young sisters are in life-threatening critical condition after being pulled unconscious from a hotel swimming pool in Yarmouth, Massachusetts.

The girls, 9 and 12 years old, were revived and taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable Wednesday night, before being flown to Boston Children's Hospital.

"We responded and did CPR and the firefighters came and saved them, thank God, but they're in very tough shape," Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos of the Yarmouth Police Department said.

Police say they were being supervised by an uncle at the time; there was no lifeguard on duty.

The near-drownings happened at the Bayside Resort Hotel.

Police are commending the work of the citizens and family members who pulled the children out of the pool, the emergency responders who performed life-saving measures, as well as the doctors and nurses.

    The investigation is ongoing.
