Jesuit Priest From Argentina Surprised by Pick for New Pope

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Boston ) - For more of a view on Pope Francis, we head to Boston College to speak to another Jesuit priest from Argentina.

Like everybody else watching the papal drama unfold, Father Gustavo Morello was surprised.

“I didn’t see it coming, I was thinking another guy, another person,” he said. “I guess there is a kind of national pride there, that we have an Argentine pope, a pope from Latin America.”

Father Morello has met Pope Francis but does not know him well. He does know his country well.

“I think the main challenge in Latin America is poverty.”

He says the faith is strong back home, cultivated by church men like Francis.

Father Morello knows Pope Francis is under attack in some quarters, charged with failing to help two fellow Jesuits kidnapped during the government crackdown on leftists in 1979 during the so-called dirty wars that led to a government coup.
