(NECN: Jackie Bruno, Westminster, Mass.) - A young woman from Westminster, Mass., is lucky to be alive after she was involved in a terrible accident along Rt. 140 in her hometown.
According to authorities, Alexis Maillet's car drifted into the opposite lane, hitting another car carrying Patrick Cooley and Robert Walker.
Both Cooley and Walker sustained non-life threatening injuries, but, Maillet's car caught on fire, trapping her inside the vehicle.
Westminster fire chief Brenton MacAloney told NECN he and other first responders had to fight the fire with extinguishers until the engine arrived. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan jumped into action and helped to pull the young woman out of the burning car.
Chief MacAloney wouldn't identify the Good Samaritan, but he said he climbed into the burning car through the skylight and kept Maillet in a safe position until they could remove her. The Good Samaritan had been a paramedic and firefighter in the military so he knew what to do.
Cooley and Walker both were sent to a local hospital. Maillet was transported to UMass Medical Center. At last check, she is in critical condition.
