Canadian Man Arraigned on Sexual Assault Charges in Mass.

(NECN: John Moroney, Westborough, Mass.) - A Canadian man was arraigned in court Friday on sexual assault charges.

Police say 31-year-old Tyler W. Buttle of Inverary, Ontario, met the victim at a sexual abuse conference in Marlborough.

"My client denies the accusations, and I think what you're going to find at best is what you have here is a fairly intoxicated young woman who's making these allegations with no substantiating evidence," defense attorney Mike Murray says.

Prosecutors say the defendant drove the alleged victim to a parking lot in Northborough early Friday morning and assaulted her in his vehicle. The two had apparently been attending a conference at the Best Western Hotel and had also been at a bar in Marlborough before the alleged attack.

"She fled from the car, he chased after her, brought her back into the car, assaulted her again, and then a second time she was able to get free," Northborough Police Sgt. Brian Griffin says.

The alleged victim was able to escape the defendant and went to a home in Northborough for help, which is where police found her. Buttle was later arrested at his hotel.

Buttle is being held on $20,000 cash bail, and has been asked to surrender his passport. He is expected back in court next week.
