Menino to Undergo Procedure for Broken Leg Saturday

(NECN: John Moroney, Boston) - Tom Menino told the people of Boston a number of weeks ago he would not seek another term. On Friday, the city's longest serving mayor is back in the hospital after breaking his right leg.

The mayor was expected to attend an event on autism awareness at the Lee School Friday afternoon, but his office said Menino twisted his ankle as he was going into the building and was forced to back out at the last minute.

He was later brought to Brigham Women's Hospital, where doctors found the mayor had broken his right fibula.

Menino was at Fenway last week for his annual Opening Day tour and has been back on the job for the last couple of months after dealing with a series of health setbacks.

He will now spend the night at Brigham and Women's and tomorrow doctors are expected to fix his fractured lower leg using screws and plates - undoubtedly a frustrating turn of events for someone as dedicated to his job and the city as Tom Menino.
