Worcester Officials Looking for Ways to Make Bell Pond Safer

(NECN: Katelyn Tivnan) – There’s a push to make one of Worcester’s most popular summer cool-off spots safer.

Worcester City Councilor Konstantina Lukes is asking the city manager for a report on ways the city can make Bell Pond safer.

The most recent tragedy happened two weeks ago, when a 10-year-old boy drowned in the pond.

“We have to do something and I cannot sit on the city council for another summer season not making some real attempt to make Bell Pond Safer,” said Lukes.

Worcester DPW Commisoner Robert Moylan says options like filling the pond, removing sediment or draining the pond are not practical solutions are require extensive funding or permits.

He says lifeguards will be on the site starting in July, but says parents still need to supervise their children.
