Waldoboro, Maine Man Charged With Shooting Dog With BB Gun 100 Times

(NECN/NBC News: Max Cole) -  Police in Waldoboro, Maine have made an arrest in a horrific dog abuse case.

Officials say the dog was shot between 80 and 100 times with a BB gun,.but she is recovering and has been adopted by a new family and is doing well.

As the proud new owner of Lady, a one-year-old black lab who was found riddled with BBs, Peter Blanton says he's just lucky to have her.

He happened to stop by the Lincoln County Animal Shelter last week looking to adopt a new dog, and that's when he first met his new best friend.

"I was late that day, and I wasn't supposed to be able to get in, but the staff stayed late,” said Blanton. “They showed me this dog, and it was sort of like love at first sight."

After Lady was found walking alone on the side of the road, she was taken to the shelter, and during a routine exam to spay her, officials found between 80 and 100 bb's all over her body.

Veterinarian Dean Domeyer said, "I've never seen a dog as peppered as this is. This to me looks like a malicious act."

Domeyer says he will continue to examine Lady in the coming days, but she appears to be in good health and did not suffer any lasting injury.

"She's a fantastic dog. She doesn't appear traumatized by it, even taking and feeling her little BBs, it doesn't really bother her a bit. She doesn't appear to be shaken up by the whole experience of getting on the wrong end of a blast from something."

As for Blanton, he's enjoying life with his new dog.

"It looks like she's good to go, and she's got just a wonderful personality. We're really 100 percent satisfied with her now, so we just hope there are no further complications."
