(NECN: Greg Wayland, Boston) - Boston Police are working to solve a string of shootings over the weekend in which nine people were shot and one was killed.
The incicents are being called unrelated, but an outbreak of violence such as this, so massive, inevitably gets people thinking about the causes of such events.
"Violence has a tendency to be grouped into small timeframes," said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis.
"It's violence, it's madness, it's nihilism," said Rev. Eugene Rivers on the day the Black Ministerial Alliance gathered to endorse Boston mayoral candidate Charlotte Golar Richie.
In a 48 hour period, there were nine shootings, one of them fatal, and five non-fatal stabbings.
Three of the shootings occurred at the Stadium Bar and Grill on South Boston's Old Colony Boulevard.
Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn, a South Boston resident, says that violence has been spiking in the Andrew Square area, very close to Stadium. He calls for more community policing and also believes that there's been a breakdown in the family structure contributing to violence in every neighborhood, regardless of race.

Many of the city's black ministers agree with Flynn and also cite such factors as unemployment and lack of education.
Meanwhile, police continue to investigate all the shooting incidents.
The Roslindale victim, who was killed, has been identified as 25-year-old Nelson Castillo. Several other victims are still hospitalized, their conditions unknown.
