Boston College Student Posts Hoax Rape Story Online

(NECN: Jackie Bruno) - A Boston College student is in hot water for allegedly making some disturbing comments on Facebook.

Authorities say a male student posted he had raped three women at the school. The confession caused an uproar on campus, but it turns out the whole thing was a hoax.

Students who spoke with NECN said they thought it was real at first, which was scary, but once they found out it was a hoax, they were disgusted.

Boston College Confessions is a popular Facebook page for BC students.

"It's definitely something a lot of people look at. I know all my friends follow it," BC junior Tara Sung says.

For some, it's an anonymous outlet for angst, and for others, it's a place to write jokes - but one joke posted Tuesday went too far.

A student claimed he had raped three girls on campus, saying "I don't know what I should do ... On the one hand, I know I need to get help, but on the other hand, I can't help but be driven to do it again. I have these self-consuming thoughts that I don't think I'll ever be able to control."

It was all a hoax.

"When I thought it was real, I had an immediate reaction of disgust. I was really concerned for my safety on this campus," junior Chelsea Lennox says.

Lennox knew she had to do something, so she organized a meeting to educate her community about sexual assault and rape.

"Before we knew it was a joke, we had already started planning the event, and we found out late the night of the post that it ended up being a hoax, but we decided it didn't matter. The conversation still needed to be had on campus, joke or not," she says.

The student responsible for the post has since turned himself in. Boston College says they are looking into the incident and that student will be disciplined.

"I think suspension would be appropriate from what I know. I don't know about explusion, but at least suspension 'cause it was a really sort of messed up thing that he did and I know a lot of people who are really upset or frightened or disturbed by it for a couple of days," Boston College junior Ryan Prince says.
