Companies Hope for a Sales Boost on Small Business Saturday

    This will be the fourth annual Small Business Saturday. It was started by American Express to draw attention to local retailers on the Saturday in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

    (NECN: Chris Costa) - While Black Friday is dominated by national retailers, Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for local merchants to draw customers, in hopes that they will get a sales boost heading into the holidays.

    Brazos Running Company owner Dan McClain says they can't offer the same sales as chain stores, but that it doesn't necessarily hurt his business.

    "There's not necessarily the need for us to open at midnight on Black Friday because there are specialty items here that you can't really get anywhere else," said McClain.

    One of those items, the Hoka Running Shoe, is one reason why shoppers like Karlen Brown choose to shop local.

    "A lot of the other stores, they don't sell the shoes that we want, so this store is special and unique in that it sells the shoes that we want--that my family wants," Brown explained.

    Shoppers say at a small business, they can get a more specialized product, but still get a great deal.

    "If people know that, that will be the main thing is the marketing, getting it out there, that the deals are still going on through that day," Brown said.

    "It's crucial to the small businesses in any community for people to remember that there's still going to be some good deals for them out there and help support the community," McClain commented.
