Dozens of Vehicles Involved in Worcester, Mass. Crashes

(NECN: Mike Cronin, Worcester, Mass.) - Massachusetts State Police responded to dozens of car crashes Sunday morning, including on Route 290 westbound in Worcester, Mass., which is finally open after crews spent hours cleaning up.

More than 70 cars and three tractor trailers crashed around 6:45 a.m.

At least 30 people suffered minor injuries. Passengers were bussed off the highway to the hospital.

“As soon as we hit the bridge, I mean, we came over the top and it was a sheet of ice. We saw cars every which way and tried to slow down and realized it was just total ice. I chose to go into the divider to slow down and, you know, there was nothing I could do,” said one driver.

“I was just trying to stop my car, but I was able to get around the tractor trailer and stop my car and then try to just pull over because cars were kind of crashing up behind us. It’s a miracle that we didn’t get hit at all,” said a woman who avoided crashing.

MassDOT sent 125 crews to treat various roads in central and eastern Massachusetts.
