Woman's Body Found in Car Submerged in Spencer, Mass. Pond

(NECN: Kathryn Sotnik, Spencer, Mass.) - A tragic discovery Tuesday in Spencer, Mass., after a 2009 Subaru Outback is found submerged in a small pond off Paxton Road.

Inside the car, police say, was the body of a 23-year-old woman who lives in town.

Neighbor Carol LaMontagne says the young woman lives right along the road.

"She was on her way to work and no one saw it, and the neighbor next door told me that her boyfriend went to look for her," said LaMontagne.

Shortly after the discovery, numerous emergency workers and dive teams could be seen at the pond. The car was later removed.

Why the 23 year old went off the road, what time and how long she had been in the water are all still under investigation, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Paxton Road is a rural road with many twists and turns, and there is also no guardrail at the pond.

"She went off the road, the car flipped over, and it submerged so no one saw it," LaMontagne said.

Across the street from the small pond is farmland. At one home nearby, a resident says she didn't hear anything unusual Tuesday morning. No visible tire tracks could be seen in the snow.

Late Tuesday, a woman came to the scene to place flowers as investigators figure out what went so terribly wrong.

The victim's name has not been released, but police say the crash is not suspicious.
