Sneak Peek Backstage of ‘The Nutcracker' at Boston Opera House

(NECN: John Moroney) - Carrying on one of New England's favorite holiday traditions, "The Nutcracker" returns to the stage at the Boston Opera House.

Following its world premiere in 2012, the production has gained huge popularity and dazzled audiences.

For the first time, NECN gets a sneak peak backstage to see how the children in the show get ready.

It's a holiday classic, and while this enchanting ballet displays the amazing talents of experienced dancers, it's the children that give the show some special holiday magic.

NECN went backstage at the Boston opera house, where dozens of young dancers were getting ready for the show.

With more than 250 Boston ballet students performing, Artistic Directors Mikko Nissinen and Robert Perdziola set the new production in the early 1800s.

The story follows the journey of young Clara, who gets a nutcracker as a gift at her family's Christmas Eve party.

Over 350 costumes were created. The Christmas tree is 42 feet and six inches tall. Each performance has about 150 dancers.

It is an amazing show to help everyone get in the holiday spirit.
