Boston's Callahan Tunnel Closing for Renovations

(NECN: Jackie Bruno) - Pay attention to detour signs and give yourself a little extra time if you're going to East Boston or Logan Airport.

The Callahan Tunnel is scheduled to close Friday night at 11 p.m. for about two-and-a-half months to renovate its interior. It's a project that will cost about $20-million dollars and has been described by officials as overdue.

This means drivers will have to seek alternative routes to get to the airport or East Boston.

From the west, they suggest the mass pike to the Ted Williams Tunnel. Additionally, service roads and ramps will be opened to help people traveling through from all directions.

One driver we spoke to said, “As far as the actual transport, it's a bit inconvenient. But then, that’s Boston for you. It’s an old city with its own quirks and character. So, what do I think about it? We have to do what's necessary to keep everything going.”

Another driver said, “We can go around. If it has to be done, has to be done.”

Another driver said, “I think it's a bad idea. That means we're going to have to go around and around.”

MassDOT is hoping people will pack their patience and give themselves extra time to learn new routes and deal with traffic.
