MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont wants to get federal help to cover the cost of cleanup and recovery from the ice storm that cut power to tens of thousands of electric customers, most in the northwestern corner of the state.
On Thursday, Gov. Peter Shumlin said he had asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to do a damage assessment in the Champlain Valley and northern Vermont counties to determine if they would be eligible for federal help from damage caused by the weekend ice storm.
Meanwhile Vermont utilities say just over 1,000 customers remain with power Thursday afternoon, but it's hoped all power will be restored by Thursday night.
And snow Thursday slickened highways, causing a number accidents, including one involving a state police cruiser.
