Mass. Zoo Monitors Health of Elephant After Animal Exposed to Extreme Cold

(NECN: New Bedford, Mass.) - The deep freeze is having an impact at a popular Massachusetts zoo.

One of the elephants at the Buttonwood Zoo in New Bedford is being watched very closely after being exposed to extremely cold temperatures.

Zoo officials say Ruth, a 55-year-old Asian elephant, escaped from her heated barn on Friday at the height of last week's snowstorm, after someone forgot to padlock the door.

When the staff noticed, Ruth was brought inside and warmed with hot blankets and heaters.

The elephant is on antibiotics and is being monitored for hypothermia and frost bite.
