Springfield, Mass. 2-alarm Fire Leaves 1 Dead

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Springfield officials say a body has been recovered at a two-family home after a fire that left 10 people homeless.

Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger says firefighters found the body on the first floor at about 1 p.m. Wednesday. A man who lived on that floor had been reported unaccounted for. Leger said the body will be identified by the state medical examiner.

The blaze at the Euclid Avenue home in the Forest Park neighborhood was reported just after 1 a.m. Firefighters were hampered by below-freezing temperatures.

Leger says the home appears to be a total loss. The cause remains under investigation.

The Red Cross says a family of seven, including five children, was displaced from one unit. Residents of both units were placed in hotels and provided emergency funds for meals and clothing.
