(NECN: Steve Aveson) - A Massachusetts surgeon is adding “children's author” to his resume.
With that, he hopes to change the way we talk about medicine with children.
Inside the Pediatric Orthopedics Department at Mass. General Hospital, some inquisitive young minds learned about how they got there and how they’re going to get better.
“Dare Bone’s Big Break” is the collaborative effort by Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Gleeson Rebello and Clinical Research Coordinator Jamie Harisiades.
Both are novice authors who wanted to write a first-of-its-kind book, intended to help parents and their children navigate the experience of breaking a bone.
It’s a subject often too taboo to discuss, but not at Mass. General Hospital.
Rebello said, “The reason I wrote it was to raise the bar in terms of how kids understand everyday medical practice. If this kind of knowledge was part of a child’s consciousness, like how they would understand construction. So why not understand what we do as surgeons?”
Two years in the making, the book is getting rave reviews on Amazon and from parents and children alike.
