Conn. Sculptor Has the Olympic Spirit

(NECN/NBC News: Todd Piro) - The London Olympics are just a few of days away, and a Connecticut artist is sharing his excitement for the games.

Craig Smith is an artistic jack of all trades. He works in a Bridgeport lighthouse/studio.

Wood carver.

Metal shaper.

Pumpkin carver.

And for the upcoming Olympics, stone painter.

It's how he uses his creative gifts to show his appreciation and admiration for the athletic gifts of others.

Smith demonstrates his passion for the Olympics through his art. It's a passion that dates back over 30 years.

"i got the spirit from 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid doing the steel sculpture. And I have always fantasized about doing another Olympics."

His sculpture was displayed for all the world to see in the Olympic arena at the Lake Placid Winter Games.

And while he hasn't been to an Olympics in person since...

"I've got a passport but I think I am going to watch it on television,” Smith said.

His love of the games and his drive to capture that love in his art, hasn't wavered.
