Panda Emerges From Quarantine in China

(NECN/APTV) - Tai Shan, the young panda born in Washington DC four years ago in the city's  National Zoo, emerged from quarantine on Tuesday for the first time since his arrival at a panda breeding base in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Tai Shan, arrived at China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda on February 5.

Tang Chunxiang, deputy director of the breeding base, said the panda was getting used "to the taste of food, smell of the air, climate and environment in his motherland."

"He is getting along very well with his keepers, too. He is having a very happy life," he said.

Tai Shan's parents are expected to return to China in December 2011, state owned news agency Xinhua reported earlier.

The young panda will become part of a breeding program in his endangered species' native land.

About 1,600 giant pandas live in the wild, and another 290 are in captive- breeding programs worldwide, mainly in China.
