Man Critically But Non-fatally Injured in Hingham, Mass. Police-involved Shooting

(NECN: Mike Cronin) – A Hingham, Mass. police officer fired non-fatal shots at a man who the Plymouth District Attorney says appeared to be pointing a handgun at police early Sunday morning.

The weapon turned out to be a black pellet gun.

The DA's office says Brian Middendorf called around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, said he had a handgun and then hung up.

Police went to his house and saw Middendorf allegedly flee the scene in his vehicle.

The DA's office says Middendorf stopped on Ward Street, exited the vehicle and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at officers.

Officers pursued the vehicle until he eventually stopped on Ward Street and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the officers. One of the officers discharged his weapon and hit Middendorf.

Officers immediately called EMS. Middendorf suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and thigh. He is in critical condition, but expected to survive.

Middendorf has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for a police officer and operating a motor vehicle to endanger.

An arraignment date has not been set.
