Distribution of Condoms With Racy Slogans at Boston Schools Causing Controversy

(NECN: Greg Wayland) –The distribution of condoms is allowed in Boston Public Schools, but the packaging is what caused controversy in the city.

A student’s mother posted a photo of one of the school-distributed condoms, which showed racy images and slogans. The condoms were donated by a Boston-based company called One.

“The ones that caused offense are all submitted online by consumers and voted on by consumers. So, there’s a range of a hundred different styles. It’s changing all the time, “said Davin Wedel, president of Global Protection Corp.

Wedel says One is donating replacements.

“We’re offering to help solve the problem with that. If asked, we would think that our standard designer mix would be a better product for the schools. It doesn’t have any slogans. It just has attractive designs on the packaging,” Wedel said.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh responded to the dispute.

“Well, I mean I wasn’t happy about it when I heard about it, but I spoke to the superintendent of schools and it’s all changed now. 100% have been replaced, and the packaging is gone,” Mayor Walsh said.

In 2013, the original 40,000 condoms were donated to the system, at the launch of an expanded high school sex education program, which would make condoms more available alongside counseling.
