Mass. Trooper Suspended Indefinitely Following DUI Charge

(NECN: John Moroney) - A Massachusetts State Trooper of 14 years, Dale Jenkins, now finds himself in trouble with the law.

Jenkins has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing his personal car along a stretch of road in North Andover, Massachusetts. A passenger in his vehicle was seriously injured.

The 35-year-old trooper was off-duty at the time of the accident early Saturday, but he has been suspended without pay indefinitely.

In Lawrence District Court, not guilty pleas were entered on the trooper's behalf for a number of charges, including carrying a handgun while intoxicated.

Prosecutors suggested the defendant was evasive with police at the scene and the doctors at the hospital.

A 53-year-old man and friend of the trooper, who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, was airlifted to Beth Israel Hospital. He remains in critical condition.

The defense attorney for Jenkins argued against home confinement for his client based on the charge related to his possession of a firearm.

The defendant remains free on $20,000 cash bail. He is set to return to court next month.
