Man Charged With Murder in the Disappearance of His Neighbor

BRANFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Branford man has been charged with murder in the disappearance of his neighbor last year.

Town police said Tuesday that they arrested 44-year-old Thomas Malinka for the killing of John Deveau, who was reported missing over Memorial Day weekend last year. Deveau's body has never been found.

Authorities didn't release information on a motive or the evidence that led to Malinka's arrest.

Malinka was already being detained on $600,000 bail in pending theft and burglary cases when he was charged with murder. Police say one of the cases involved Malinka stealing prescription drugs from Deveau's home after Deveau disappeared.

Malinka's public defender declined to comment Tuesday.

A missing person report says Deveau went missing after reporting that he was a victim of an ATM theft of about $30,000.
