Dem Gorbea Becomes RI's Secretary of State

Democrat Nellie Gorbea won Rhode Island's secretary of state race Tuesday night.

Democrat Nellie Gorbea has been elected Rhode Island secretary of state.

The former deputy secretary of state defeated Republican John Carlevale in Tuesday's election.

The 47-year-old Gorbea ran the office's day-to-day operations from 2002 to 2006. She also has worked with several nonprofit groups in the state, including HousingWorks RI and the Women's Fund.

Gorbea says she will ensure that elections are fair, fast and accurate, make state government more transparent and help small businesses thrive. She says her top priority is to make the information collected in the office easy to get and use.

Carlevale is the host of a public-access TV show. He has run unsuccessfully for political office several times.

Current Secretary of State Ralph Mollis ran for lieutenant governor but lost in the Democratic primary.
