Person Questioned in Connection With 6-Alarm Fire

Gardner police say one person is being questioned on the fire

A 6-alarm fire broke out in Gardner, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, the town's mayor confirms.

One person is in custody after being arrested on an outstanding warrant away from the scene and is being questioned about the fire, according to police.

The fire originated at a large commercial building on Sherman Street around 2:45 p.m., but eventually spread to neighboring stuctures.

Firefighters are working to ensure that the fire does not spread to a box manufacturing company next door, Gardner Mayor Mark Hawke said.

"One of the buildings has collapsed. The other building, they have a pretty good handle on right now," Mayor Hawke told necn.

Several other departments assisted, including Barre, Hubbardston, Westminster, and Winchendon. A total of 50 to 60 firefighters are on scene.

"It's really a regional effort, so as soon as that first alarm goes, all the other departments are on notice," Mayor Hawke said.

According to necn meteorologist Michael Page, dry conditions combined with northwest winds at 12 MPH increase the risk of the blaze spreading to nearby brush.
