Four people were killed when an SUV driver tried to pass a tractor-trailer and hit an oncoming sedan head-on in northern Maine on Monday morning.

The SUV tried to pass a tractor-trailer on Route 161 around 10:20 a.m. in an area known as Rainbow Cove in Township 16-Range 4, about 15 miles north of Caribou, Maine state police said.

SUV driver Kimberly Lausier, 38, from Madawaska, was killed in the crash, along with three occupants of the sedan. The sedan's driver Bobbi-Jo Johnston, 33, from Fort Fairfield, was killed along with her 2-year-old daughter Alana Nelson and her 55-year-old mother Laurie Ann Johnston of Carlingford, New Brunswick.

Police said there was one survivor, identified as Robert Lausier, who was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Route 161 was closed for over seven hours and was re-opened around 5:30 p.m.

State police interviewed witnesses, but could not locate the driver of the tractor-trailer. They say it's possible the driver did not know the crash occurred. They ask the driver to contact them at 207-532-5400.
