400-Pound Cape Cod Turtle Killed by Human Hazards

Veterinarians with the New England Aquarium say a 400-pound leatherback turtle was killed by a combination of three different human hazards.

The turtle's body washed up on shore in Barnstable, Massachusetts, Sunday.

Officials say the turtle's body showed signs of strangulation from entanglement from a rope or marine gear.

X-rays showed the turtle suffered fractures to its shell and vertebrae, indicating it was struck by at least one vessel.

Plastic sheeting was also found in the turtle's stomach. Officials say it was ultimately the entanglement which killed the turtle.
