Orange Line Service Back to Normal After Outages

The cause of the power outages is not yet known.

Widespread power outages in the Greater Boston area caused severe delays on the Orange Line on Friday morning.

As of 11 a.m. National Grid said all power had been restored. Around 45,000 customers were initially affected by the outage.

Regular service resumed on the Orange Line around 8:30 a.m., according to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

Cities and towns affected by the outage included Everett, Medford, Malden and Melrose, Massachusetts.

The outages originated at the Everett substation, and about 10 to 15 minutes later, a squirrel caused another outage in Malden, adding to the problem.
