64 Animals Seized From Maine Home

Animal welfare officials have seized 64 animals - mostly cats - from an apartment in Lewiston, Maine.

Animal control officers say one pet was already dead and others needed immediate medical attention when they arrived on Wednesday.

The Sun Journal reports that no one answered the door a day later. A reporter noted trash, household debris and the smell of urine in the hallway.

The Animal Welfare Program is part of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Department spokeswoman Courtney Marchelletta says charges may be considered after all of the animals have been evaluated and evidence analyzed.
